You will be required to write a (5 page minimum-NO Maximum) analytic research paper. This double-spaced, 12 font, 1” margins, Times New Roman, page numbered, w/ bibliography (does not count page total) paper will have you reflect and build an argument. This assignment is not summarization of the main ideas in the readings, but a thoughtful and concerted analytically written essay. The goal of this project is to assist you in developing the analytic skills necessary to grasp challenging ideas and debate them at an intellectual level beyond the scope of superficiality. You will engage the central conceptual arguments in the readings and academic research in developing your analysis. You will select a topic related to a specific political theorist we have (or will) encounter in the course and connect it a social, political or economic problem. (select an issue you are interested in knowing more about and link its theoretical origins) Note: select one of our theorists from syllabus, which will ground your framing of your topic. Structure: (also review ‘Writing Political Theory Papers’ handout) Your paper shall be structured with a clear and coherent thesis question in your introduction (say what you’re going to say). The body (say it) of the paper will provide the academic support from the readings along with your analysis in sustaining your central thesis. In your conclusion (bring it all together) while providing further questions to be interrogated. You must include bibliography (which does not count as part of the page total). Use Chicago/Turabian Style citation format. (we will use END NOTE-not footnote) CHICAGO STYLE citation format: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/717/01/ (Links to an external site.) It is also suggested that you visit the DVC Writing Center for any further assistance on developing the structure not the content of your paper. Source minimum, at least 6 academic sources (primary/secondary, books, journal articles etc.). Keep in mind this is a research paper which requires analyzing various sources to develop your essay. You are required to access DVC Library for research and consultation on how to discern academic sources from non-academic, ‘fake-news’ etc. See guidelines on plagiarism. You are required to upload paper to CANVAS. Some things to consider: How is your topic connected to American (global) social, political and economic development? How are the views presented in your research connected to theories we’ve encountered? How does evidence from your selected sources assist your analysis in regards to politics/power?
