Write a three to four page paper on the following question: In the nineteenth-century, gender roles and the family underwent dramatic transformations, especially among the white, middle-class. Ten Nights in a Barroom was the most popular play of the nineteenth-century and epitomizes the beliefs and values of the new middle class. What positive and negative examples does the play present for the behavior husbands, wives, and children? That is, who is a bad husband and who is good? Who is a bad wife and who is good? What connections does the play make between morality, especially of husbands and wives, and financial success and economic status? What do these values tell us about the new middle-class in antebellum America? To cite your sources, use footnotes! For the play, cite the Act, Scene, and Line number.
