We need reasons and logic. Logic connects the various data together. Without it the essay is incomplete. Data and logic are like bricks and concrete. They need to go together. According to the principle of The Five Ws (or The Five Whys) an essay can only be considered complete if it answers the following questions: Who? The subject or topic. What? What event(s) occurred? When? The timeline of the occurrence. Where? The location of the occurrence. Why? The reasoning or rationale behind the event or activity under analysis. In the social sciences it is important to always add a sixth question to the list… How? The process that allowed the event to occur including the social rules that made its occurrence possible
