We will be citing examples of the concepts discussed in Chapter 8 in your final paper. This is a paper that focuses on romantic relationships. Please, watch the film Valentine’s Day (2010) and answer the following questions. (Look this is a silly romcom film, but I promise we can make a scholarly attempt to extrapolate some communication concepts from it): Synopsis: February 14th, Valentine’s Day, is not a national holiday, but it is one of those days that must be celebrated. Valentine’s Day follows the lives of several couples during this day. Their stories are told through the interconnections they have with each other. Some will find romance in their relationships, and others will feel the heartbreak of ending a relationship. In this Russian roulette world of finding love, everyone in the film is asking for advice on how to find and keep true love. a. Several relationships are highlighted throughout the film. Compare and contrast how the various couples express intimacy toward one another. b. Captain Kate Hazeltine picks up on several of her flight friend Holden’s nonverbal communication behaviors and makes assumptions accordingly. She shares these with him; what are they? c. Over the course of the day, florist Reed Bennett and his girlfriend Morley Clarkson experience several stages of Knapp’s developmental model. Describe them. d. How is technology used throughout the film to enhance communication? Give specific examples. e. Self-disclosure and self-awareness are important themes in the film. Explain how the characters Dr. Harrison Copeland, the teacher Julia Fitzpatrick, the associate Liz, and the sports hero Sean Jackson operate in various panes of the Johari window. f. Age is a factor that affects our perception. Explain how the “young love” experienced by the two high school couples might differ from the “love” experienced in the other relationships. g. Choose any other communication principle we have discussed in class this semester that you saw exemplified in the film. This is where you have a chance to shine - you can get creative and apply any comm theory to the film that you can find. I expect this paper to be at least 5 pages double spaced MLA format. Take your time answering the questions and give details that answer each question thoroughly.
