Racism in the modern day is often founded on societal beliefs of biological distinctions among people. Different races are ranked as inherently superior or inferior to each other based on presumed shared inheritable traits, abilities, or qualities. These views can take the form of social actions, practices, or beliefs, as well as political systems, in which different races are ranked as inherently superior or inferior to each other. They have been trying to scientifically confirm racist ideas, but they have always been proven to be unjustified. While race and ethnicity are distinct concepts in modern social science, they have a long history of equivalency in public usage and earlier social scientific literature. "Ethnicity" is often used in a sense like that of "race": the classification of human groups based on attributes thought to be inherent or necessary to the group. As a result, racism and racial discrimination are often used to stand for prejudice based on ethnic or cultural differences, regardless of whether the differences are racial.
