Students will read Mad in America which links much of the course content for the semester. Upon completion of the book, students will create a critical reflection of the role of diversity in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. The reflection should show growth and understanding relative to the role of diversity, difference, privilege, and oppression in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. All papers should utilize APA format and include no fewer than 5 pages of content, not including title and reference page. Appropriate grammar and terminology are expected. Students will use 3 scholarly resources beyond the reading and the text. These must be peer reviewed journal articles or .gov or foundation sites, no blogs or generalized internet resources. Be sure to include in-text citations when appropriate and a reference page. Content sections to be covered in this paper include: How does culture impact mental health? Include demographics. You may want to look at news sources to get a different perspective, particularly if there are reasons why certain populations such as racial or ethnic groups, age groups, geographic locations, gender, or diagnostic groups are included in demographics. How do cultural customs impact mental health diagnoses and treatment? Are there cultural customs which influence the perspective of mental health? Are there religious or faith traditions which impact views and treatment of mental health? Are there cultural norms which dictate the way in which people may respond to or view mental health? These are examples of the types of questions you should be asking. Five (5) points a day will be deducted for late submissions. Ten (10) points total will be deducted for failure to include a reference page and/or in-text citations.
