MUSI 107 Final 5/2021 This exam consists of 5 essay questions. 1. The emotional content of popular music has evolved in recent times to reflect more narcissism and anger rather than traditional topics such as romance. Is this a result of appealing to a more adolescent audience rather than an adult one? What are some of the driving forces in today’s culture that move us in this direction? 2. The performance of Popular Music today requires a Video to accompany it. Is it still possible for a Pop Artist to have a successful hit without this recent feature and why? If some have already done this, name them and describe their work. 3. Should Music be Human or AI? Since many enjoy EDM (Electronic Dance Music) today it brings in a basic question. Music has always been a Human function. Now with Artificial Intelligence and the use of Algorithms, melodies and songs have been created without Humans. Is this a good thing? 4. The Middle States Association which determines the curriculum for undergraduate studies has included music and art as a requirement for a college degree. The idea behind this thinking is that the cultural traditions of societies are located in their music and art. We learn about who we are through our music. Are there any examples of music today that reflect the cultural traditions that our parents/grandparents enjoyed? Will they continue or are they dying out? Why? 5. There was a time when the Music Appreciation Course consisted primarily of European Classical Music history. Over time this has diminished and continues to do so. In contemporary society, there is less interest in this music. In our own American Culture musical taste has become somewhat more global eg. K-Pop and various genres from the Caribbean and South America. These trends are inevitable and natural. Will, we still retain the respect for great European composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, etc. or will they become irrelevant?
