There are no other parts to the exam. Your essay should be 6 -7 pages in length, 1-inch margins on all sides, double-spaced, business standard (Times New Roman, Arial, etc.) 12 pt fonts. Do not exceed the maximum page length. Remember to proof-read your essay and to use appropriate spelling, grammar, academic style/language, and academic citations. Essays with egregious spelling and grammar errors may be docked points. I prefer that you use APA style citations; however any academic style is acceptable, so long as it is applied consistently throughout the text. You will need a bibliography for all works cited or paraphrased: use only course sources for the essay. Do not use outside sources to complete the essay. Please follow the directions regarding outside sources and be certain to cite sources from within the course Please write an essay responding to the following prompt: Suicide is a common cause of preventable death for all age groups (over 16). In order to prevent suicide we must have both effective prediction and effective prevention methods such that we can identify individuals (or groups at risk) and work to disrupt or prevent the suicidal crisis for these individuals (or groups). In approaching suicide from a sociological perspective this course has encouraged you to think about the impact of social structure, institutions, and social practices upon the propensity toward suicide and suicidality for different groups. In the first half of the quarter, Durkheim made a compelling case for thinking about suicide as a “social fact” and identified a variety of social forces (integration, regulation) that can influence suicide within a society. In the second half of the course, Freud discussed the aggravating effects that “civilization” can have upon individual happiness. You have read a variety of perspectives arguing for the ways that society can keep individuals alive or hasten self-destruction. Write an essay that discusses the ways that sociology can aid in prediction and prevention of suicide. Your essay should have three parts: prediction, prevention, and a discussion sec‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍tion. You might consider using a modified “5-paragraph essay” structure with a three part thesis. First, you will choose a group that has been identified in the second half of the course as being at higher than-the-general-population risk for suicide (Men, Sexual Minorities, Transgender Individuals, Racial Minorities). Discuss the increased risk that this group faces, including any theories regarding why this group has a higher-than-average rate of suicide. Second, summarize some of the ways that suicide can be prevented (as discussed in the readings and lectures from the last week of the course). Choose at least one way that suicide could be prevented that would apply well to the group you have identified. To do this you will need to make a link between the theorized reasons for higher rates of suicide in these groups and appropriate prevention methods. Last, discuss Freud and his ideas about civilization and human happiness. In this section you will briefly summarize Freud’s argument about how Civilization makes human beings unhappy (including his notions about guilt). Do you see any of Freud’s ideas applying to the group you have identified as the main topic of your essay? Elaborate on this. In your conclusion, make one “big picture” suggestion about how to change or restructure society to reduce suicide risk for your chosen group. For each of these three parts your essay should be firmly grounded within the literature presented in class. You should use at least one readings per section of the paper. You are not being asked about your opinion on these matters. Rather, you are being asked to use the available data and your sociological imagination to identify specific examples of prediction and prevention within a sociologically based suicidology. This is to be written as ONE complete essay with an introduction and a conclusion. Do not write it as three separate essays or as three short essay questions. As this is ONE essay, you should think about what connects the three parts of the essay so that you can write a cohesive (if three-part) thesis for the paper. The majority of content (lectures, essays, videos) should be from the second half of the course (weeks 6,7,8,9 & 10) but you may use resources from the first half of the course as well Keep in mind that successful essays will: use course literature/resources and demonstrate mastery of course concepts, demonstrate that you have done the course reading, and engage meaningfully with Freud. Recall that the purpose of such an essay is to demonstrate two factors: You completed the required course work, and you are able to understand, summarize, and apply course concepts. You are performing knowledge, so don’t hide that knowledge or make it difficult for the grader to see the work. Use of quotations is encouraged, but quoting alone will not aid your grade. You must make the quote do work – that is how we know you understand the reading you pulled it from! A good way to assure yourself that you are doing this is to “sandwich” a quote: introduce the quote (what is the quote going to tell us as the reader), quote, unpack the quote (breakdown how the quote demonstrates what you said it does. Do not use quotes to substitute for your own writing, instead use quotes as a kind of “evidence”‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ or “example” of the argument you are making.
