For this paper, choose a song that you feel represents your culture’s generation. This option encourages you to think of music and lyrics in a new way. I’m not asking you to simply tell me why a particular genre of music or musical artist represents your generation, but to dig deeper.

I want you to do a close reading of the lyrics within the song (only ONE song can be chosen, not several), and explain in a thesis-driven essay at least three reasons (not simply three lyrics) why this particular song represents your culture’s generation.

Notes/Rules to consider when quoting lyrics:

1. When incorporating lyrics into an essay, put the lyrics inside quotation marks. Short quotations can be integrated into a sentence, such as, “In the song “Hey Jude,” the Beatles sing, “Take a sad song and make it better/ Remember to let her into your heart.”

2. Long quotations or those that are four lines or longer, need to be set off in a block quote, where you indent the entire quote by tabbing twice from the paragraph above it.

3. Don’t include the entire song’s lyrics within your paper, unless you would like to add them at the end of your paper for your reader’s knowledge (this will not count towards your word count)

4. Avoid directly quoting more than four lines of lyrics at once, as this will become too much of someone else’s words

5. Always introduce the artist, the year the song was written or recorded, and the correct title of the song somewhere in the beginning of the paper, even if the song is popular. Don’t assume your reader knows the song

6. Song titles always appear in quotation marks

7. Song album titles always are italicized
