How do different visions / stories / outlooks on the human condition and human community answer or approach the problem of politics differently? How do different perspectives tell different stories, so to speak? Draw on course materials and thinkers we have discussed. Discuss Realism and its different “flavors” or varieties. What is the general unifying core of realism (hint: what is the driving force or determining factor for the political system according to realism?) Deliberate and debate between yourself as a “pro-democracy” realist and a “pro-monarchy” realist, what are the different arguments for this? How are realism and pragmatism closely aligned? Discuss the Liberal-democratic tradition and liberal-democracy. What are the core principles and values of liberal democracy? Draw on Locke and Rousseau as we discussed extensively in class. Discuss Citizenship and citizen leadership in democracy: what are a citizen’s obligations and expectations in democracy? What is the “vision” for a prosperous, vital, beautiful, and Just society according to a liberal-democratic outlook? What drives this prosperous, just vitality for liberal democracy? Discuss Marxism.
