Claude Monet or Edouard Manet is the assigned artist, you may choose. Write a minimum of 500 words on the following topic: Each of you signed up to focus on the biography of one or more of the artists studied in class. For this assignment, please write on the work of the artist whom you signed up to focus on, or, if the category featured multiple artists, on the work of one of those artists. For the artist on whom you choose to write, pick three paintings widely spaced apart, the understanding of which you think particularly benefits from knowledge of the artist's biography, and which could also, ideally, elucidate the course of the artist's career for someone with no prior knowledge of Impressionism. Of course, how you apply the above requirements will vary depending on the artist. For a long-lived artist like Monet, you could pick a painting from the 1860s, one from the 1880s, and one from the 1910s. For a much shorter lived one, such as Seurat, you are restricted to a period no longer than a decade, and you may even select pieces that are only three or four years apart. Similarly, while some works reflect a specific event in an artist's life (such as Monet's 1879 portrait of his wife Camille on her deathbed), most will have only a more general connection to the artist's biography, in terms of the artist's professional goals, their travels, etc. How you choose to relate a work to the moment in the artist's life when it originated is up to you. Proceed as follows: after giving a brief introduction to the artist, devote a paragraph of 150-200 words to each of the three paintings you chose. Discuss it formally and in terms of content, describe how it is typical of the artist's style at that period in their life, and relate it to the relevant biographical information. For the second and third work you discuss, you can describe them in comparison to the first (or the second), to explain how the artist's style has changed over the years. To conclude, explain how these three works, taken together, can help us better understand the trajectory of the artist's life and of their artistic career.
